REGENT PENNY BANK
A PUBLIC SERVICE The sum of £2 8/- has been granted by the Trustees of the Regent Penny Bank to the Whangarei District Schools Committee for the purpose of wiping out the deficiency on their winter milk account. The committee during last winter supplied school children with hot milk, charging those who could afford it a small sum per week. Those children whose parents could not afford it. were supplied free of charge, as in the case of parents on relief works, etc. The number of children supplied per day was approximately 100, and this has accounted for a deficiency, the balance of which now amounts to £2 8/-. It is interesting to note that the Regent is the only theatre in the world where a portion of the money spent by the children in picture entertainment is voluntarily set aside by the company! for their benefit. Any child may become a member of this bank, and on each attendance at the theatre is credited with one penny in his or her bank book. The surplus of pennies obtained through the purchasing of admission tickets by children who have not bothered to join the bank is allowed to accumulate in the care of the trustees, and is used from time to time to assist really necessitous cases, as the above. The total surplus since the founding of the bank some three years ago has amounted to a little over £IOO, from which several disbursements have been made. The trustees for the bank are: His Woi’ship the Mayor, Mr. W. Jones; Mr. D. McCarroll, Child Welfare Officer; Messrs. C. F. Collins, H. W. Crawford and R. K. Trimmer, The accountant is Mr. W. T. Surman. 976
