ASSISTANCE SUGGESTION SALES TAX OF 2D. A POUND. APPLIED TO LOCAL MARKET. (Special to "Northern Advocate.") WELLINGTON, This Day. It is understood that in the near future a definite proposal is likely to be made that a sales tax of 2d a pound on butter should be placed on sales made on the local market. If this plan is adopted, it is unlikely that the producer will receive the whole of the proceeds of the sales tax. A proportion will probably be used to finance activities in connection with herd improvement. One method suggested is the provision of a fuller veterinary service, with a view to eliminating tubercular cows and other unhealthy animals from milking herds. It is also considered that steam sterilisation of dairy appliances is another innovation which may possibly be adopted. It is hinted in some quarters that the constitution of the membership of the Dairy Board will be reduced from 12 to 8, The representations that possibly may be brought about will be three from the North Island and one from the South Island, and that the Government will appoint four members. It is expected that the New Zealand ’‘Co-operative Dairy Company will appoint one North Island member and that the North Auckland and South Auckland districts will elect one member, and that there will be another one for a ward embracing Taranaki, Rangitikei, Manawatu, Wairarapa and Wellington districts.
