MAKE YOUR MEALS A PLEASURE.
DON’T SAY YOU HAVE NO TIME. Meals which are served attractively, in pleasant surroundings, are much more beneficial—and, incidentally, taste very much nicer! —than those which are served “just anyhow.” So be a wise housewife and serve every meal—even breakfast —as nicely as you can. When meals are always served well, you will have no need to be flustered should visitors .call unexpectedly. But be sure you make it a rule that, when meal is ready, the family is there ( to enjoy it. And do insist on cheerfulness at meal times, too. If the children have a difference to settle, don’t allow this to be done at meal times, for nothing is so likely to cause indigestion as unpleasantness during a meal. Having made an effort to get the right ' atmosphere, the housewife should do her part by always serving meals on a well-laid table. Pretty Linen.
This is easy nowadays, for there is | so much good linen and china available at the right prices. Regarding the linen, change this according to the meal. I suggest a col-1 oured cloth for breakfast and supper, j a plain white damask cloth or linen mats for dinner, and a fancy cloth for ,
tea. In this way you will get variety. Although nowadays' there is a decided vogue for an all-over cloth for dinner and supper, separate mats have much in their favour. One specially good point is that they can be laundered at home, whereas a large damask cloth, to look as it should, really requires professional treatment. China and Glass. Always buy this in a stock pattern, so that should a piece be broken it can be replaced. And this should be done immediately, for two reasons—replacements don’t cost much when there is only one piece to buy, and there is nothing which spoils the look of a table more than the use of a piece of china which does not match the rest of the service. A piece of thick baize should always be used under a cloth, and cork mats under dinner mats. These make the meal time quiet and peaceful, and also prevent damage to the polish on the table.
