PETITION TO MAYOR. WORK IN ROTATION. (Per Press Association.—Copyright.) CHRISTCHURCH, This Day. A petition signed by between 1100 and 1200 relief workers styling themselves the Anti-Charity League has been presented to the Mayor of 'Christchurch, Mr D. G. Snllivap, M.P., urging the abolition of relief institutions which supply partial relief to unemployed and their families. The object of the petition, as stated is to prevail upon the Government to face its own obligations. The petitioners do not wish to interfere [with, charity for the aged or sick, and funds raised for such purposes they do not wish to disturb, but they suggest that u onoy in the hands of other relief organisations should, be used 1o provide ,r few hours’ work in rotation to relief workers at a standard rale of 1/9 an hour. The petition concludes: “The undersigned realise that a campaign to do away with charity and induce Parliament to do its job might involve temporary hardship, and the undersigned pledge themselves to avoid infringement of Ihe law in any shape or form. ’ ’ The. Mayor said last night that lie would refer the petition to those engaged with him in the relief of distress in the city, and the proposal [would bo thoroughly examined. If a workable scheme could be evolved, the idea would have his sympathy.
