AMUSEMENTS

PLAZA. ‘(SILENCE OF DEAN MAITLAND,” Excellent supports were the forerunner of the main picture at the Plaza last evening—an entertainment in themselves. They wore “Nautical Nonsense,” with Tom Katz’s band and 90 artists* Plaza, news service, and another of the delightful Walt Disney coloured cartoons, “The Pied Piper.” Produced many times on the dramatic istage, the talky version of “The Silence of Dean Maitland” proves that the story has not lost any of its power to ! stir the imagination and hold the interest. Made in Australia, the film shown last night at the Plaza, marks a distinct advance in screen artistry in that country. John Longden, the talented. English actor, scores a triumph in the. difficult role of Dean Maitland, the young clergyman who returns to his native village with a life of promise before him, only to endanger the prospects of a successful career by an entanglement with a village girl. Interest never flags as the story is dramatically told of his cowardice when he fails to admit his guilt of a crime and allows to serve a term of 20 years’ imprisonment in his stead. The conclusion is a fitting climax to a powerful and dramatic story, and the acting in the final scene bears the impress of sincerity and force somewhat, lacking in; the opening scenes. The part of Dr Eyerard was strongly impersonated by John Warwick, and Alma Loo by Charlotte Francos. The minor parts are equally well portrayed by a large cast ofifluppo'rting players, -including Jocolynj/Hqwarth, Patricia Mine-bin, Les Wharton and Claude Tnrton. “The Silence of Dean Maitland” and its excellent,, supports make for fine entertainment at .the Plaza.
