PITCHED BATTLE
JEWS AND MOHAMMEDANS. MOSQUE DEFILEMENT SEQUEL. NINETY CASUALTIES (Received 11 a.m.) ALGIERS, August 6. Twenty people were killed and 70 wounded in rioting at Constantino, Northern 'Algiers, owing to a drunken Jewish Zouave entering a mosque during prayers on Saturday and insulting the worshippers. The news spread like wildfire. Mohammedans invaded the Jewish quarters and fighting lasted all night. The rioting temporarily terminated as the, result of a Jewish and Mohammedan meeting at the Town Hall y ibut upon its dispersal Mohammedans stopped, searched and manhandled Jews, this leading to a fresh outbreak. Citizens barricaded their, houses while Mohammedans marched down the central street and fired at several houses. Then the Jews attacked cn masse, causing a. pitched battle, in which knives, revolvers and bludgeons were used. Troops and gendarmerie were rushed from Algiers and restored order. The of 'Algeria* M. Jules Garde, is hastening to the scene from Paris and is due on Tuesday.
