AUCKLAND, This Day. .., A gift of a £SOO debenture 'by ah elderly man to a woman friend on the . night before he went to hospital, formed the basis of an action before Sir Justice Fair today. The man died, intestate and the Public Trustee claimed the debenture! Christina Marian Goodehild, a nurse, said she had been an intimate friend for over seven yeats of George. Henry Fetheram, a retired marine engineer. ' He had shown a fatherly interest in, her. He was 04 years of age. Before leaving for the hospital for an operation he had handed her a brown paper parcel, saying: “This is for you'also two bank books, which he asked her to keep Tor him. Some days later she discovered the parcel contained a debenture. Pethcram had other money and. shares which she handed to the Public v Trustee. She kept the debenture./
Counsel for the Public Trustee said the women's story 'was entirely un- : corroborated, but she impressed as an honest witness. The whole estate was worth £3300, and difficulty had been mot in finding relatives overseas. The Judge accepted the woman's evidence and upheld the gift.
