NO POLICE GAOL

POSITION IN WHANGAREI. EITHER RUSSELL OR AUCKLAND. Whangarei’s lack of a, police gaol was commented upon at the Whangarei Magistrate’s Court this morning, when Air Wyvern Wilson, S.M., was giving his decision in a judgment summons. The default of payment w r as fixed at ten days. “In the Whangarei police gaol, I suppose,” said Mr Wilson. “Notwithstanding that we are a considerable village.” counsel pointed out, “wo have no police gaol. It may seem rather incongruous, but eases have to be sent cither to Russell or Auckland.” “I suppose Auckland is more convenient. There, is more accommodation there,” the magistrate commented, in fixing Auckland gaol as the place of imprisonment in case of default. The question of the provision of a police gaol at Whangarei was raised some time ago by counsel in Whangarei, but so far no further information on the subject has been received.
