Bean, folloAviug a sudden illness, Avhicli occurred while ho was playing tennis. Mr Bean, Avho passed his 73rd birthday tAvo days ago, Avas a retired railway servant, Avhosc last appointment Avas stationmaster at Lyttelton. He Avas a very enthusiastic tennis player, and his skill and steadiness enabled him to play regularly in company with much younger men. Mr Bean bore, his years very lightly and Avas extremely popular in tennis and golf circles, and in both of these games he Avas a regular club player. ° f • At every tennis tournament in Christchurch he Avas a familiar figure, usually talcing charge of the umpiring, although he did not often umpire himself. He avus the most remarkable of the tennis veterans of Christchurch.
