CRICKET CHAMPIONSHIP

SATURDAY’S GAMES TWO THREE POINTERS. WHANGAREI AND SERVICES. Three-point wins by Wh.mgarei and Combined .Services over School B and Whakawanga respectively were features of Saturday’s championship cricket matches. Nomads also advanced their position on the ladder in collecting a first-innings victory at the expense of Maun-gakaramea, while Onerahi and School A shared the honours of their meeting. WILSON DESTRUCTIVE. GASH’S PINE KNOCK. Wilson was the deciding factor in the vanquishing of School B. In the boys’ first essay at the crease, eleven overs sufficed to send them all back to the pavilion. Wilson sent down six, including two maidens, and bagged 7 wickets at a cost of loss than 2 apiece. Gash also ..finished-up ■-with startling figures, 3 for 0 in 2 overs, and 37 was the meagre total, Whangarei’s innings was the distinct reverse, the batting being on top from the outset. Jennings and Gash paved the way for the maximum points and piled up 87 before the latter was caught with his total at 69. This was | very neatly compiled and included 4 sixes and 7 fours. Jennings’ 43 only included 4 boundaries. With 5 down for 166, Wilson closed the innings and again displayed his bowling prowess, to dismiss the boys for 28, again claiming 7 victims at a cost of 14 runs. Detailed scores are:— SCHOOL B. WITH BAT AND BALL. The Combined Services—Whakawanga game was played at Hikurangi in more of a holiday spirit than with the will to win, but the former’s threerioint victory was fully expected. Weir was the predominant force. A well-played 48 was his contribution with the bat and a run-out was all that prevented him from going on to hit up another of his bulky scores. Knaggs and Ladkin also registered 21 and 16 respectively, and the total reached 118. In claiming 6 wickets for 12 runs, Weir completely tied up the country batsmen, and they w T ere all out for 34, Their second venture ivas more successful. but. WINS DAY FOR NOMADS. A splendid third-wicket partnership between Mcßeath and Jounneaux carried the day for Nomads against Manngakaramea. The pair became associated when both the opening batsmen wore out with only 4 runs on the board, and stayed there until 137 bad been scored. The teams had previously been cm an equality of points, and the game was keen. The country side made a good start, hoisting 40 for the opening wicket. Child, who was let off by Cotterill in the slips, again batted steadily and well, and later Hudson was seen in a hitting role. Lawrence, who brought himself on first change, emerged with the excellent figures u!.' 5 for 20 off 7 overs. An unfortunate misunderstanding saw Collins run out when ordered back, the onus resting on Mcßeath. However, the exhibition of between-wicket ■work given by Mcßeath and Joun neaux was as good as has been seen at the Reclamation for many a long day. Towards the end of the long partnership the field was rattled, and the Manngakaramea score was passed before Mcßeath, after scoring 89 of 133 added while he was in, was bowled by Child. The later batsmen were in-and-out for a hit. Scores were: — Nomads. E, Collins, run out 3 Morton, b Child 2 Mcßeath, b Child 89 Jounneaux, c Weston, b Child . . 33 Cotterill, run out 11 F. A contributing factor in the draw between Oneralii and High School A at the Reclamation was the very late start. Owing to the non-arrival of the mat from Oneralii, a start could not be made before 2.50 o’clock. I The seasiders had first use of the i wicket and, thanks to sound scoring by Laugdon, Fyfe, Drake and Burch, the total reached the reputable figure of 169. Davies finished up with a good average of 6 wickets for 36. School A’s opening partnership produced 53 runs, to which Hawkes contributed 32 before being well taken by Hewlett. Falvey and Murdoch also attained double figures, and P. Wilson, the other opener, was the seventh out for a patient 16. In taking 4. for 16, Mason was the best trundler. Details: — ONERAHI.
