NAZI THREAT
MENACE TO AUSTRIA TROOPS ON BORDER TEN THOUSAND ARMED MEN. REPUBLIC’S COUNTER MOVE. (United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright.) (Received 9.0 a.m.) LONDON, February 24. The Vienna correspondent of the British United Press says the Austrian Government has been informed through the Heimwehr that .10,000 members of the “Austrian Legation” in Bavaria have been concentrated on the Austrian frontier, namely at Braunau, Herr Hitler’s birthplace. These men are heavily armed, and are ready to cross the border at any moment.
The Government is pending troops toward the threatened point. That Austria will remain, a Republic was an important statement made by Dr. Dolfuss at a Press luncheon. The new constitution, he said, would not be a mere repetition of foreign ideas, but would be based on Austria’s needs. CANADIAN CHARGE. PROPAGANDA DISTRIBUTION. (Received 9 a.m.) OTTAWA, February 24. A Jewish member of the House of Commons, Mr S. W, .Jacobs, alleges that Dr L. Kempf, German ConsulGeneral, is distributing pro-Nazi and anti-Jewish literature In Canada. Mr Jacobs says he will move on Monday that Berlin bo asked to recall Dr Kampf.
EVIL OP HITLERISM.' j I \ POPE’S DENUNCIATION. (Received 9 a.m.) VATICAN CITY, February 24. In reference to the canonisation of three “Pietists,” one of whom is German, the Pope denounced Hitlerism. He said: “The lives of these saints are a warning against the movement which wishes the world to return to| paganism and its ancient horrors. “The great noble German people' is at a tragic moment of its histpty — tragic, because the menace of great evils is always terrible. It is a moment of exaltation of thoughts, ideas and practices, which are neither Christian nor human, and of a pride of race which is producing a pride of . life far removed from the spirit of Christianity and humanity.”
The Pope also denounced the Protestant propaganda ■ in Italy as, causing grievous spiritual harm and an offence to the Divine Redeemer Who had suffered much through it.
