McCallum, discounts allegations that graft prevails in the mines. Australian miners had alleged that preference was shown to foreigners, some of whom they said had paid £0 to £lO to secure employment. Furthermore, foreigners were said to have been favoured in piece work, because the shift bosses received a percentage of their earnings.
