SERIES OF MISHAPS
BRITISH AIRCRAFT CARRIER. PLANE LOST; OTHERS DAMAGED. (Received 9.0 a.m.) LONDON, February 4. A message from Port- of Spain, Trinidad, states that the British aircraft carrier, Furious, arrived there safely this evening, after a series .of mishaps which delayed her three days. It is officially reported that the Furious lost one aeroplane and that two others were damaged while she was on her way out from England to join the British West Indies squadron on its annual spring cruise. The ship’s troubles began in the Bay of Biscay, where Flying Officer J. S. de War was washed overboard in a storm. The destroyer Watchman swerved in, and members of her crew hauled the nearly drowned flier on board. One day from Gibraltar, Flying Officer G. W. Montagu’s machine nose dived into the sea during exercises. The aeroplane. sank, but again the Watchman w'ent to the rescue and saved the pilot and observer. Two aeroplanes were damaged in landing on the deck of the Furious during regular flyyig exercises. Minor fires caused further delay. One fireman was seriously injured.
