SURPRISE STRIKE
NEW YORK TAXI DRIVERS. COUNTENANCED BY MAYOR. * (Received 1 p.m.) NEW YORK, February 2. Taking advantage .of the heavy overnight snow, which made walking difficult, from 8000. to.. .15,000 taxi-cab drivers halted the taxi services in a surprise strike early this morning, seriously disrupting the city’s transportation system. • The union demands that the ac< erued proceeds of the city tax of -5 cents on each fare, which they later declared to be unconstitutional, shall go to the drivers instead of to the companies. : . ;.. ' The Mayor, Mr La Guardia, has declared the strike to be legal, and has stopped the issuance of new drivers’ licenses, to prevent the owners from* importing gangsters and other undesirables as ‘‘scabs.” ho has also offered to arbitrate the differences. ■ There was considerable violence as j the unionists picketed the railway, terminals and steamship piers, scuffling with independent drivers who were accepting passengers. •
