FATALLY INJURED
ELDERLY WOMAN. KNOCKED DOWN BY CAB. TRAGEDY AT GISBORNE. (Per Press Association.—Cr,.->yrlc:bt.') GISBORNE, This Day. An accident in the centre of the town on Saturday afternoon resulted in the death of a woman, Mrs Elizabeth Pitcher, aged 62, who was'knocked, down by a motor car on the footpath In Alain Street. Recently the Borough Council instituted the parking of motor cars at an angle in Alain Street, and at about fi c 'clock on Saturday evening, when the footpaths were crowded witli people shopping, a ear, driven by Air Walter Robert Noilsou, who had parked his car, made an attempt leave. A bicycle was leaning against a verandah post two feet from jdie front •„!' Mr Neilson's ear.
Alain -Street slopes rather sharply to the footpath, and Avhen Air Neilson took the brakes off the car to back if out the vehicle slid forward. Air Neilson jammed his foot doAvu hard on the brake, but his foot slipped off the brake on to the accelerator. The car bounded fonvard, struck the bicycle and carried aAvay the verandah post, against which it Avas leaning. Then it mounted the footpath, Airs Pitcher being knocked doAvn. She Avas taken to hospital, but died two minutes after she Avas admitted.
At an inquest yesterday a verdict Avas returned of death from injuries received through being struck by a motor car. Deceased had resided in Gisborne for sixty yoarsv She is survived by her .husband and an adult family of .one daughter and six sous, three of Avhom reside in Westport.
