AMBULANCE ART UNION.
. (To tho Editor.) Sir, —At a full mooting of the Whargar’ei Y.M.C.A. Division, St. John Ambulance Brigade, held on Tuesday evening last, the following motion was carried unanimously:—“That we, as a Division, disassociate ourselves entirely from the art union being conducted on behalf of tho Wellington Centre of tho St. John Ambulance Association, • * tickets for which are being offered for sale in Whangarei, and that we discourage as far as possible the purchase of these tickets locally.” Wo would like to bring under your, notice the fact that, although wo wish the Wellington association every success in the good work we know they are •doing, in common with every other section of the St. John Order in tho Dominion, we feel that it is only fair and reasonable to expect that funds for tho benefit of the work in Wellington should be raised in that district, and that it is hardly the correct thing for the Wellington association to endeavour to raise funds from Whangaroi, especially as the local Division is having such a hard struggle to keep going. A representative of the concern which is organising the art union asked us to sell tickets on its behalf; and offered us as a commission one shilling and fourpenee for each book of 100 tickets at a penny each, which we sold. This would mean that for every 1/4 left in Whangarei, 7/ would go to Wellington, This offer we promptly turned down, and wo feel confident all will agree that we did the right thing. In addition to this, we have received an order from the Commissioner for the Auckland district forbidding tho use of art unions as a means of raising funds for St. John work. We feel confident that the people of the Whangarei district appreciate the efforts of the local Ambulance Division to give the very best possible ambulance service, and that when the time comes for a financial appeal to be made it will not bo necessary for us to go outside our own district, or to use an art union as a means of raising money. I am, etc., S. E. LOWE, Divisional Secretary, Whangarei Y.M.C.A; Division St. John Ambulance Brigade.
