BLAZING HOUSE

RESCUE OF CHILDREN. FATHER’S INTREPID ACTION. (Special to “Northern Advocate.”) AUCKLAND, Thursday. Four children were snatched from their beds by their father in a burning house at Swanson about 2 o’clock this morning. The mother, Mrs Sydney Hammond, awoke to hear crackling of fire, and roused her husband, who opened the bedroohi door. Flames roaring down the passage leapt at him. He closed the door, opened a window, pushed his wife out, and scrambled out himself. He then ran round the house to the children’s room. He smashed a way through the window with his arm, and with blood streaming began banding th% children out to the mother. Dense smoke filled the room, and just as the father pushed the eldest child through the window, the whole room burst into flames. ■ While neighbours helped his family, the father was taken to a doctor and five stitches were inserted in his arm. The family lost everything, except £75 insurance on furniture.
