CANNED FRUIT
EXPANSION OF INDUSTRY. ENGLISH STATISTICS. (British Official Wireless.) (Received 9 a.m.) RUGBY, July 19. The Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of Agriculture referred in a speech today to the rapid expansion since 1926 of the English fruit canning which was due in part to the great change in the public taste for canned fruit. The annual consumption of canned fruit, the speaker said, had increased fourfold since 1919 to abouf: 3,500,000 ewt, of which one-seventh was home produced. Of imported supplies, chiefly pineapples, peaches and pears, only about 4 per cent competed directly with English canned fruits. Eighty factories for canning fruit and vegetables had been established in England and Wales.
