WHANGAREI RACING CLUB

ANNUAL MEETING HELD. —Z_ PRESIDENT RE-ELECTED. PAST SEASON’S ACTIVITIES. The annual meeting of. the Whangarei Racing Club was held last night, Mr L. W. Nelson presiding, owing to ihe unavoidable absence of Mr R. Gi llosking on account of sickness. The report and balance sheet, as published in the “Northern Ad Vo cate,” were adopted unanimously. Air Nelson, in dealing with the report, referred to the death of Mr H, 0. Nolan, president of the Auckland Racing Club. No one, he said, had devoted more time and energy in the interests of racing than Air Nolan, and he had been largely responsible for obtaining concessions and easements from the Government for country clubs. On Air Nelson’s motion, a resolution conveying to Nolan and he family the Whangarei Club’s appreeh lion of Air Nolan’s services to racing during his lifetime, was carried unani mously. Air Nelson said that Air Husking had

asked him to refer to the good work of the Emergency Committee, which had saved the General Committee a lo! of work and had obviated the calling together of the whole committee on many occasions. *' Mr Hosking also desired reference to be made to the cost to tire club of the granting of free railway transport for horses competing in - the club’s meetings. Mr Nelson said the committee had decided to assist owners by running a special train. The committee was of the unanimous opinion that the innovation was a good one and had helped materially towards the success of the meeting, Mr Hosking was of opinion that, had the train not been run, the same number of horses would not have competed. Mr Hosking was of the further opinion, as were most of the club members, that the place betting system had assisted all clubs and had helped to augment totalisator returns. Before its introduction, totalisator figures were falling. Place betting was not the only cause, but it had caused the pendulum to swing the right way. A number of clubs which were only just existing were now firmly established and carrying on under the new, conditions.
