ON ELLERSLIE TRACKS. KING MARCH IMPRESSES, GOOD ROUND BY MANAWHENUA. HIGH GRADER JUMPS FAST.,(Special to "Northern Advocate,”) AUCKLAND, This Day. The w’eather was fine for training at Ellerslie this morning, though a cold wind made .matters*rather unpleasant. No. 1 grass track was open for fast work, while hurdles were erected on the outside of the course proper. The steeplechase course was . also open. Owing to recent rain the going was very heavy. Number One Grass. Gay Broney ran five furlongs in 1.7 4-5, being assisted over the last halfmile by My Money in 53 l-ssee. He finished very resolutely. Lord Val easily beat United over four furlongs in 50 4-ssee. Irish Song ran half a mile in 53 l-ss. Valroe beat Catoma over seven furlongs, the last six taking 1.23. Dark Marble ran half a mile in 53 3-ssec, This horse has been working well.
King March was too good for Sunny Sky at the end of siv furlongs in 1.22, the fust three taking 40sec. s • Deputy Ruler ran three furlongs in 39sec. Manawhenua , easily beat Gay Cockade at the conclusion of a round in 1.5 S 1-5, the last half-mile being traversed in 54 4-ssee. Wilton ran six furlongs in 1.32, Darina taking 1.28 2-5. Alpinus beat Hushing at the end of half a mile in 52sec. Arohamai ran throe furlongs, in 49 l-ssec. Landlubber traversed half a mile in 53 4-ssec, and Korokio did a useful round of pace work, Caliente pleased better than Love Story at the finish of five furlongs in 1.9 4-5. Prince of Orange did a round in 1.50 3-5, the last half-mile taking 54 3-ssec, The Lackham —Morzonia filly and Chief Cook covered three furlongs in 42 2-ssec. Kiltowyn was going better than Grand City throughout three furlongs, though the latter finished fast and was almost up with him on the post. ' The Jumpers. High Grader (A. Jenkins) started out over four hurdles on the course proper and jumped fast and cleanly till he reached the third fence, which he hit and knocked his rider out of the saddle. He was remounted and again started over the four, which he jumped in good style, though he clouted the last. Be is a very speedy horse and jumps fa’st. Wee Pat (Baker), Patutahi (Garrett) and Mahkill (Craddock) were given a similar task, finishing as mamed. Mahkill hit the laSt one hard.
Canadian (Miles) £lSo set out for u schooling task on the course proper, but slipped into the first fence and dropped his rider. He was remounted and jumped two fences safely. Neil (Baker) and Snow Brince (McRae) jumped the steeplechase fences on the flat, giving a fast display. Snow Prince twisted a bit at the stone wall, but otherwise it was a good exhibition. Lucess (P. Thompson)- and ■ Vulpine (Miles) went over a round of the big country, the former, who is a much more experienced jumper than hid com-
panion, showing to more advantage, but nevertheless Valpine shaped well.
"bmeo (A. Jenkins), Acervate (A. McDonald), and Wiltshire started off over the fences on the flat, but after clearing the brush Wiltshire was pulled up- and the other two continued over the hill, finishing about on terms, though Omeo was going the easier of the pair at the finish.
TAKANINI TASKS. : GOOD EFFOBT BY SPEEDMINT. A (Special“Northern'Advocate.*'} ■ AUCKLAND, this Day. The outside grass was open for fast work at Takanini this morning, but the going was soft. Gastronomy worked over a round, going at an easy pace till reaching the four-furlongs post, whence he came home in 54 3-ssec. Alignment ran six furlongs, but was only doing a shade better than Isseo to the furlong. , ' Arch Euler and Sir Willonyx covered a round, the pace being on only over the last three furlongs, which they traversed in 40 3-ssee, They could have done better. Tondalayo and Tatyoon ran five furlongs in 1.6, Tatyoon being a length in front at the finish. Speedmint ran nine furlongs, being assisted over the first four by Meliironey and the last five by The Hiker. The last mile was covered in 1.49 2-5, and the last half-mile in 54 2-sscc. Speedmint and The Hiker finished together, and The Hiker then continued on for another round, doing his work well. Speedmint is in good condition for her engagement on Saturday. Principal (Mcllroy) was schooled over one hurdle, jumping in good style, LADY PANDORA SCRATCHED. (Special to “Northern Advocate.”) AUCKLAND, This Day. WItfOOKA IMPRESSES. 1 GOOD TIME TRIAL. PILLOW FIGHT'S FUTURE. SAN FRANCISCO; July 18. A message from San Bruno, Califor nia, states that turf followers had their first glimpse of the champion Australian horse, Winooka, in a time trial to day. He responded with a sprint of three furlongs in 35sec, and won going away by several yards from Prince Heather and Chazzan, two fairly strong horses. Winooka impressed the onlookers. Following a special match race at Tanforan on July 29 agaihst Frisky Matron for a purse of 10,000 dollars, over five and a half furlongs, Winooka, with the exception of a possible appearance at Portland, is to be campaigned in Chicago and on the New York tracks. Wihooka’s owners have been offered 75 per cent, of the gate‘receipts and a purse of 2,500 dollars for a match race at Portland with Quick Away, which is considered one of the smartest horses in the West over five furlongs. The offer is under consideration. Pillow Fight, the New Zealand horde, has been withdrawn from the Hawthorne Handicap and Gold Cup during August, He will, however, participate in certain special races on the Same track;
