PORTLAND

(From Our Own Corresponflent.)

Welfare League. The annual meeting of the Portland Welfare League was hold in the Portland hall on Friday night. Air F. Boyd presided over a poor attendance. Tin* secretary, Air G. Guest, read the financial statement for the year, showing a credit balance of £">l 7/4.

Mr F. Boyd, in his opening remarks, spoke of the lack of interest shown by the residents of Portland in not. being present at the meeting. What the Welfare League was doing was of interest to all, and the presence of a few others would bo very encouraging. Nominations for the committee had been called, but only three replies had been received. He himself had been helping for the past six years. He was quite willing to carry on, but he thought new tdood was wanted, and he would like to see greater co-operation in the work if the township was to go ahead. In dealing with the silent pictures question, the speaker said it was unfortunate that they had had to be discontinued owing to lack of patronage and a financial loss. TJecoipts for the pictures were £1(1S o/t), and Hie expenses £PIB 11/2. The silent picture circuit through the Y.AI'.C.A. had been discontinued, and to have arranged for further supplies would have been ton

expensive, Jn connection with the Indies’ croquet lawn, it had been found necessary through lack of finance to continue givi * j mg assistance in upkeep of lawns. How 1 ever, he was pleased to state that the j ladies had done very well, and the , green was in very good order. It was not possible that they would be able to assist in the upkeep of lawns this year, but he would ask that greater support be given by obtaining new members. The Library was doing very well indeed, and was being added to very quickly. A new method had enabled them to purchase some very reasonably priced books. The purpose for which socials wore held had turned out very satisfactory indeed, and had resulted in both pleasant evenings and bringing in revenue, which had greatly assisted tlu* work of the Welfare League. The lack of an experienced conductor had handicapped the progress of the band, which had not been seen or heard as often as the league would have liked.' However, under the instruction of Mr C, Just, June., the boys were doingvery well, and it was possible that a few band concerts would be arranged for. Correspondence between the directors of Wilsons Portland Cement Co., Ltd., and the Welfare League re the instah j ing of plant for talkie pictures ha'd ! been in progress, but arrangements are not yet complete. Mr Loyd paid warm tribute to Cm valuable and efficient work of the secretary, Mr George Guest, who was employed as a part-time secretary at a very small remuneration. Canteen.—The canteen had •• done quite well^ .Mr George Davis thanked the chairman and committee for Ihe valued work done. He said it was easy jn carry on in good times, but in times like the present with reduced population b; Portland, and with so bide help from many who could help, the committee, with tin 1 secretary, had done very well A vote of thanks was accorded to the outgoing committee.
