SHORTAGE OF LEMONS,

APPLES PLENTIFUL.

(Special to “Northern Advocate.”) AUCKLAND, This Day.

Fair supplies of Island fruit are still held, but will no doubt be cleared before the next lot comes to hand. Dessert pears still meet with good demand. Apples are in good supply, and prices are,still on the low side, although there has been a slight improvement owing to smaller quantities of second grade fruit being sent in. Mushrooms came forward in fair quantities from Clevedon and Marton as well as locally-grown. As usual at this time of the year lemons are in good demand, and supplies rather short. Ripe bananas meet with fair sale, and supplies of tomatoes are rapidly decreasing owing to the lateness of the season. Quotations are:—

■Apples: Jonathans, 4/6 to-6/- per case; Delicious, 2/6 to 5/6; Salome, 2/to 4/-; Brighton, 3/- to 4/-; Ballarat, 3/- to 4/3; Munro, 3/- to 4/-; Granny Smith, 4/6 to 6/-. Pears:'Dessert, Coles and Nelis, 7/6 to 10/-; Louis Bon, 8/to 10/-; cookers, Keiffer, 4/6 to 6/-; P. Barry, 4/- to 5/6. Persimmons: 1/6 to 2/-. Oranges: Californian, 34/- to 40/-; Fijj, 13/- to 14/-; Rarotongan, 14/- to 15/-. Mandarins: Fiji, 11/* to 12/6. Tomatoes: Best, local, 8/- to 10/-; others, 4/- to 7/-. Tree tomatoes: New Black, 7/-. Bananas; 13/- to 19/-. Cape gooseberries:. 3d to 34d per lb; Quinces: 6/- to 8/- per case. Lemons: Extra choice, 12/- to 14/-; others, 6/to 10/-. Grapes; Hothouse, choice Colman, 1/2 to 1/7 per lb; others, 9d to 1/1; Black Hamburgs, 6d to Bd. Vegetables. Supplies of cabbage and cauliflower from Ohakune are not over plentiful, and consequently prices have improved. Peas and runner beans are almost over for this season. Supplies of Southern potatoes came to hand ou Monday. Good quality local autumn-grown potatoes are not plentiful, but quantities of inferior grade are still offering. Supplies of celery arc about equal to the demand, which has shown improvement since the cold weather set in. Pumpkins are hard to sell, and kumaras continue in heavy supply. Fair quantities of onions are being sent to market. Quotations are: —

Potatoes, 3/- to 4/- per bag; Southern, 7/- to 8/- per ewt; swedes, 1/(1 to 3/- per bag; onions, 2/- to 2/(1 per bag; kumcras, 2/- to 2/9 per bag; cabbage, 3/6 to 7/6 per sack; cauliflowers, 0/- to 13/6 per sack; pumpkins, 2/- to 6/- per ewt; cucumbers, 1/6 to 3/6 per dozen; carrots, 4d to 8d per dozen; parsnips, 1/- to 1/6 per dozen; beet, 3d to 6d per dozen; turnips, 3d per dozen; radish, 3d per dozen; spring onions, 4d to (Id per bundle; spinach, 4d to Gd per doz.; leeks, 3d to ad per dozen; green peas, 6/- to 10/6 per bag; French beans, 2/to 6/- per bag; marrows, .1/- to 3/- per dozen; melons, citron, 2/- to 3/- sack: lettuce, V- to 3/- per case; celery, cooking, (id to I/- bundle; dessert, 1/to 1/6 per bundle; rhubarb, 1/- to 1/G per dozen. Eggs and Butter. Small supplies still keep up the price of first-grade hen eggs, but B and G continue to rule at lower rates. Quotations are: —First-grade hen eggs, 2/1J per dozen; B grade, l/8£; and C grade, 1/4S. First grade duck eggs, 1/1U; B grade, l/7£, and G grade, 1/4J, Farmers ' butter, 6d to 8d lb.

Poultry. At today’s auctions the supply of poultry was medium, and the demand was fair. The prices paid remain about level. Selling rates were as follow; — Cockerels: Heavy breeds, prime, 2/6 to 4/3 each, nob prime, 1/6 up; light breeds prime, 2/- to 3/-; not prime, ]/- up. Fat roosters: Heavy breeds, prime, 1/6 to 2/6; light breeds, 1/- to 1/6. Fat hens: Heavy breeds, 1/9 to 2/6; light breeds, 1/- to 1/6. Laying hens; Heavy breeds, 2/- to 2/6; light breeds, 1/6 to 2/6. Pullets: Heavy breeds, best, 3/- to 5/6; smaller. 1/6 up; liglft breeds, best, 3/- to 5/6; smaller 1/6 up. Drakes: Young, prime, 1/9 to 2/6; smaller, 1/3 up. Ducks: Young, 2/6 to 3/6; old, 1/6 to 2/-. Drakes: Old, 1/6 to 2/-, Gobblers: 5/- to 7/6.
