A FREAK
PURE WHITE PHEASANT. OBTAINED AT PUHIPUIIJ. PECULIAR TO DISTRICT. A freak, in the form of an absolutely white cock pheasant, was brought, dowr by a sportsman at Puhipnhi when the shooting season opened. The pheasant was pure white, even to its legs, and such a bird is very rare indeed.
It is not the first time, however, that a pure white pheasant has been obtained from that district; some years ago one or two similar birds were shot. As far as is known, though, the white pheasant is peculiar to the Hukerenui and Puhipnhi districts, ami the strain has been known there for a good many years. The birds are evidently some sort of throw-back.
Sportsmen continued to report good bags, especially up the Afangakahia, where one man obtained the limit in a very short time yesterday. In other districts, too, the birds are plentiful, and good sport is being obtained.
An indication of the excellent sport being obtained further North is given by the large number of birds being sent .south on the trains. The railway staff reports having a busy time with pheasants and ducks.
