MAUNGAKARAMEA NOTES

PUBLIC HALL SOCIETY

(Prom Our Own Correspondent,)

The annual meeting of the subscribers to the Alaungakaramea. Public. Hall Society (Inc.) was held in the Library on Saturday night last, when the following wore present:—Messrs S. W. Crawford (chairman), A. Babe, D, McLennan, L. Smith, T. 0 ’Carroll, A. AfcLennan, L. O’Carroll, .1. Lamb, A. B. Miller, G. Allcoek, H. Crawford, T. O’Shea, and W. H, Gillingham (secretary). The chairman, in the course of his report of the past year’s work, said that the year had been a quiet one, and also a lean one, in keeping with the times we were passing through. The average commission received for the use of the salcyards for the past six years was £123. With a small outlay the yards could be put in order for another year, when perhaps finances would be better, and further work could be done, • Necessary repairs, had been done to the hall, but the floor needed attention.

The secretary presented the balance sheet, showing a small debit balance.

The chairman formally moved the adoption of the report and balance sheet. The motion was duly seconded and carried. General. A new schedule of charges for the hire of the hall, etc., was then drawn up, the rates being practically on the same level as heretofore. It was decided to charge all clubs using the recreation ground and taking gate money, £1 per -annum, while other clubs are to be charged .10/- per annum. The rent of the cottage was left the same as last year, as was also the members annual subscription.

The rent for the use of the tennis courts for the ensuing year was fixed at £10; and it was decided to add to the height of the fence round the courts adjoining the hedge. Mr A’alder was granted permission to treat the floor of the hall with sand', as suggested by him.

On the proposal of Mr T. o ’Carroll, it. was decided to hold an annual ball in aid of the hall funds.

Several recommendations with regard to minor matters wore made to the in-

coming committee

The following officers and committee were then elected for the year,—President, - Mr S. W, Crawford; vice-presi-dent, Mr G. Allcock; secretary and treasurer, Mr W. H. Gillingham; auditor, Mr T. O’Carroll; committee, Messrs A. Babe, L. O’Carroll, T, O’Shea, D. McLennan, together with officers ex officio.

On proposing a hearty vote of thanks to the outgoing committee, Mr O’Carroll made a strong appeal to the settlers to rally round the committee more than they had done in the past. The committee was doing good work for the public with the means at its disposal. The property was one to lie proud of, and everyone should take an interest in it. It was due to the foresight of the older settlers that they possessed such a. tine property, and it was in<*nn>bent on the younger people to show their interest in its upkeep. Large sums had been raised in the past far various national and charitable objects, and if all did a little it would help to create and stimulate interest in local affairs. The vote was carried by acclamation, and the chairman, in returning thanks, said the committee had endeavoured to do its best with the funds at its disposal. They were anxious that the “joint and several” at the hank should be wiped out, and at the same time they were desirous of keeping things as efficient as possible.
