TEAM'S FINE TRIBUTE
“A GREAT SKIPPER.”

The English cricketers, on the first evening aboard the Duchess of Atholl, on their way homeward from Canada, held a private farewell dinner, at which Herbert Sutcliffe presented the captain, D. R, Jardine, with a silver cigar box engraved with the names of the team.
“I can never say how much all appreciated playing under you," he said, "and admired the skill, courage, and fighting manner in which you upheld the best traditions of English cricket. The games in Australia were less pleasant than they might have been. Nevertheless, we had the satisfaction of knowing that we were playing under a great skipper and fighter. Every cricket enthusiast owes you a debt of gratitude for a' glorious tight, and for placing England at the head of international cricket." "I am confident,” concluded Sutcliffe, "that Jardine ranks with any previous captain, and hope he will skipper the English team for many years. We were privileged, to play under his leadership." Jardine, who was deeply moved by the spontaneous acclamation, thanked the. team for its loyalty. G. Duckworth presented a silver muffin dDh to Mr R. C. Dalai ret, the manager, and W, R. Hammond was given a memento of his record score against New Zealand in the second test match at Auckland.
