METHYLATED SPIRITS ADDICTS,

TWO MORE VICTIMS.

AUCKLAND, Monday

‘ ‘ They were celebrating during the week-end on methylated spirits,” said Detective-Sergeant Kelly in the Police Court tiiis morning, when Llewelyn Francis Steven Ncary, a labourer, aged 40, and David Thomas, a labourer, aged 31, appeared on charges of being rogues and vagabonds, having been previously convicted of being idle and disorderly persons. Botli were sent to gaol for three months. -Consfable Stewart said at 11.30 last evening he went to a house in Belgium Street, where he found Ncary wandering around in a stupid condition. He smelt strongly of methylated spirits and nearly went off his head when witness spoke to him. “Something must be done about this methylated spirit business,” said Air McKean. “We had a woman here on Saturday who could not Avalk, through the effects of methylated spirits.’ ’

An application by Neary to have his name suppressed was refused. “Methylated spirits has got him, too, sir,” said Air Kelly, when Thomas appeared. “Constable Stewart found him lying helpless at the foot of the stairs in a house. He smelt strongly of methylated spirits and there was a number of empty bottles lying about. ”

Accused admitted that he had been drinking, but said they had started on boor. He did not know’' what ho was drinking at the finish. It might have been milk and water.

Constable Stewart said Thomas had told him that methylated spirits was the best thing ho had ever had.
