ANNUAL CONCERT

.M ANGARA! SCHOOI

There was great excitement among (he children of Manga pal on the evening of December Id, Hie school concert, a Christinas tree and .a visit from Santa Claus all combined left nothing for any child to wish for further. The concert was a well attended and highly successul entertainment, the children taking their various parts excellently and reflecting very great credit on their teachers, .Miss Mcl’hee and Miss Firman.

The following programme was rend ered, Air M. .1. Byrt acting as chair man and announcing the items:

Opening playette, “New (Roy Brice, Joan McConnell); danee, “Fair .Rosie*,” infants; Swill"- Song, senior givls; play, “The Mad 'Pea Barfy,” Juniors; recitation, “The Pirates,” senior boys; song, “Santa ('lans,” juniors; recitations, Colleen Baker, Terry Carter, I’ona .McConnell; sketch, “The Raw Recmit,” Derek Thorbiirn and dim Price; song, “The Dream Man,” junior room; “Nigger Minstrels,” seniors; Clog Dance, Jean Bee and Joy Cotton; National Anthem. The accompaniments were played l»y Miss McPhee.

Mr liyrf, in his remarks at the close of the concert, congratulated the teachers on the success of the entertainment. Before proceeding to the presentation of prizes, proficiency and good attendance certificates, Mr Byrt spoke in glowing terms of the high standard of work shown By the school. The result of the proficiency examination was outstandingly excellent. Of the eight' candidates, presented, every one obtained proficiency and the percentage of marks was very high. The speaker asked the audience to show their appreciation of Miss McPhee’s work and excellent results in the usual manner. The applause was very hearty and sustained.

Mr Byrt, before presenting the attendance certificates regretted that owing fo the recent whooping cough epidemic there were not so many certificates as formerly, lie also expressed concern as to the declining roll number and the difficulty in maintaining an average necessary to keep the school in its present, grade. All would be very sorry to see any change in ths staffing of the school which, under the present regime, is doing so well. Santa Claus then made his appearance and was rapturously welcomed by excited Juveniles. Surrounded by small figures he looked a very benevolent (dd gentleman and as he handed out, fhe various treasure's from the splendid Xmas tree with kindly words to the small recipients of tin* gifts, he seemed to be every whif as happy as his voimg friends.

Supper and a dance roiirluded a very happy evening. .Mr Phil Carter acted as .M.C. and music was supplied by Mr B. Finlaysou, .Miss McPhee, Miss S. Pickmerc and Mr (!eo. Carter.
