Concert And Christmas Tree

The annual school concert and Christmas Tree festival was held al Ihe

schoolroom on Thursday evening, when there was a (in ealtendance ol loeal residents and visitors from

neighbouring districts

Entering thg grounds, one was charmed with the beautiful and carefully tended gardens, and the head teacher, Miss Eawlinson, and her pupils were most heartily congratulated on their success in winning the silver cup .presented by the Waimate .North I’- and A. Association for the beat school garden in the North, The concert programme, though not lengthy, was of a high standard, the various items being much enjoyed by the performers and audience alike. '[’he gaily decorated Christmas tree was, of course, a great attraction, and the arrival of Santa Claus (Mr t\ O. Armstrong) was hailed with delight, and every child received a gift and a bag of sweets.

Proficiency certificates were presented to Grace Litherland, Leslie Mooney, Prank Middleton and Dorothy Temple (competency), and good attendance certificates to Grace Litherland, Phyllis Petersen, Brian Cutforth. and dames Gnnson.

Miss 'Rawlinson’s special prize for pupil gaining highest marks at the final examination was awarded to George Norris, with dliS marks out of a a possible 400.

Addressing the gathering, the chairman, Mr Norris, expressed the regret, of the community at the approaching departure of' Miss Rawlinson and the assistant, teacher, Miss .Mayes, each of whom was presented with a beautiful

bouquet. The chairman, on behalf of the residents, presented Miss Rawlinson with a crystal salad bowl, and sauce decanter, and Grace Litherland, on behalf' of the children, presented 1o Miss Hayes a handsome ivory box. After musical honours had been accorded in the orthodox manner, both ladies responded suitably and 1 hanked all ‘present for their handsome gifts and kindly good wishes. After full Justice had been done to

a. sumptuous supper tlit* room was clean'd for dancing, which was carried on until a late hour.

The concert programme was as follows: National Anthem; opening chorus, sung by the senior pupils, “Early One \Morniug” and “Oh, Hush Thee, My Baby’'; play, “Snow White and the Seven "Dwarfs’’ (Smfw While, Pat Wilson; Natalie Bussell; Mirror, .lames Cunsou; page boys, Ilex. (luiisou and D. Carter: dwarfs, Dick Mooney, lan Edge, Cordon Edge*, Ralph Edge, (.Marry Cunson, Harry Russell and Harry Petersen; fairies, Marie Mooney, Eileen Petersen, Thelma (luuson, Doreen Trigg, Mary Norris and Audrey Edge); song and chorus, “When the Stormv Winds do Blow” (“Barnacle Bill,’’ Brian Cutforlh); reeilation, “The Recruiting Sergeant,'’ C. Norris; play. “The Witch’s Parlour” (Witch, Cwen Cutforlh; Ted, Brian Cutforth; .lane, Dorothy Temple: fairy, Phyllis Petersen): song, by Grace Eitherland (encored); fa ice, “Catching a Euuatic' (Mrs Washem, Frank Middleton; Mr Washem, Hugh Mooney; Constable Koppeui, Leslie Mooney; Tom Sureboot (crack- centre forward), C. Noivis; the referee, Mr Berlew, Charles Norris; chorus, “dingle Bells,” all pupils. The accompaniments for the evening were ably rendered by .Miss A rm strong.
