HELM ORDERS

I'HAXGK STARTS IX XKW VKAR. Du' old practice of ordering the helm to he ported to turn the vessels head to starboard, and vice versa, will eease at midnight on December ill. Under the new regulations, the order “starboard’' or “right” will be given when the master or officer in charge on the bridge requires the vessel, when going ahead, to go to starboard. The present practice is to order, for example, “hard a port,” when the master requires the vessel’s head to be turned hard to starboard. The words “starboard” and “port” are to be retained, but to be used in the direct sense. Commencing with the new year there will be a short transitional period, of about six months, during which there will be used, in addition to the word “port” or “starboard” a warning word, emphasising the fact that the new method is intended. The word chosen is “wheel.” Thus the orders, during the transitional period, will be “wheel to starboard” or ‘ ‘ wheel to port. ’ ’ As soon as the new regulation is gazetted, it will be brought directlv tinder the notice of masters, officers, and others concerned. A fleet order has already been issued by the Admiralty to bring the regulation into farce in the X'avy on .Tanuarv 1.
