LONGER LIFE
POUR-YEAR PARLIAMENTS
PERMANENCY PROPOSALS,
THIS WEEK’S BUSINESS,
(From Our Parliamentary Special.)
WELL!NGTON, Saturday
Concrete proposals for the permanent extension of the life of Parliaent to four years will appear in the House of Representatives next week. The question of the licensing poll is involved with the date of the general election. Mr Forbes said last night that the legislation will provide the necessary machinery for extending the poll on the licensing issue for four years.
The Government does not anticipate any serious obstruction to the bill, but it is well known in the lobbies that the Opposition will fight the measure at every stage.
The Customs Bill will come before the House for the first time next week, giving confirmation to the Ottawa Conference decisions.
Legislation for the establishment of a central reserve bank is also taking shape, and will be introduced within the next few weeks. The Prime Minister said last night that if any modifications were found to he necessary as a result of the Finance Minister's visit to England these would he given effect to after he had returned.
Another piece of legislation which is due to make its appearance next week deals with native lands. It is the intention of the Government to complete the Budget debate on Tuesday evening. The Government feels that this has given members of both sides ample opportunity to discuss the administration of the past year. Mr Forbes will reply to the discussion on Tuesday night, and the remainder of the week will be devoted to the Estimates, which will probably be discussed at- length owing to the many reductions which have been made in votes this year.
