REPLY TO MR STALLWORTHY

PETULANT BEHAVIOUR

“I want to refer more in sorrow than in anger to the extraordinary speech made by Mr -Stallworthy,” said -Mr F. Lye (Coalition, Waikato) during the course of the Budget debate in the House of Representatives yesterday. Mr Lye eomeranted upon the absence of- Air Stallworthy from the Chamber, despite the fact that lie bad notified .him of bis intention to refer to his speech.

“I have no feeling about the matter,” said Air Lye. ‘‘l feel sorry for Air -Stallwortby for his hysterical outburst.”- Air Lye said that Air Stallworthy had stated that, for the sake of. protecting a “miserable bookie,” he (Air Lye) had attacked the Post-master-General, forced the House to a division, and nearly defeated the United Government.

“I am not the type of man to turn away from anything unpleasant,” said Air Lye. He said that the facts were that be bad happened to be chairman of the committee of the House .which considered the petition of six Auckland postal officials who were dismissed in connection with a horse-racing matter. The finding of the committee was unanimous that the punishment was unduly severe, and the committee made a recommendation to the House for reinstatement. Air Eye said that lie made no excuse or apology for standing four-square on the finding of the committee, as it was the only decent thing that any honourable gentleman could do. Was there anything wrong with that? The statement that had been circulated was entirely wrong and misleading. When Air Lye referred to the Minister of Education, the linn. R, Masters, and the Order-in-Gouncil relating to picture theatres, Mr S. 0. Smith (New Plymouth) referred to newspaper reports of the previous debate, in -which he bad been alleged to have used the term “it is untruthful,” whereas he claimed that Ik* had said “it is not so.”

Mr Lye Avent on to refer to Mf Stallworthy’s version of the eon vernation he had had with the Minister nbont the matter, and said that it was

an unwritten law among members that confidences Avere not to be disclosed. He characterised Mr Stallworthy’s ’action as “ the bohaA-ionr of a petulant eJuld.”
