FALLING FLAT
AUSTRALIAN STRIKE THREAT N.S.W. STANDS ALONE. WISER COUNCIL ACCEPTED. (United Press Association— By Electric Telegraph—Copy rlgh t.) (Received 9 a.m.) SYDNEY, September 13. The • proposal for a general strike throughout Australia as a protest against the reduction of the basic wage finds little sympathy outside New South Wales. Mr 0. A. Willis, former Agent-Gen-eral for the State, has already warned the Trade Unionists against a -general strike. He advocates caution at the present moment, -stating that by striking the workers would be playing into the hands of their real enemies. ’ Although all the Victorian union loaders strongly resent the wage reduction policy, there are many responsible officials who refuse to be embroiled in a general strike. The general secretary of the Waterside Workers’ .Federation at Melbourne, Mr A. Turley, warned the members of that body that they would be well advised to take no part in a-general strike unless instructed to do so. He said that it was mainly people out of work who wore urging the strike. •
“Not interested,” seems to be the attitude of the Trades Hall officials at Perth and Fremantle towards the proposed strike.
The attitude of the Tasmanian unions is not likely to be known until after the miners’ organisation has made a move, which is not yet in sight. Unless some drastic lead is given, the industrial movement in South Australia is riot likely to consider seriously the question of a general strike. This is the' consensus of opinion in union ranks at Adelaide.
