INSANE MAN

THREATENS A CAAIPER. SYDNEY, October 23. A young man, who said that he had come from Bendemecr, and who lias now been declared to be insane, caused some excitement among campers at Tilbuster Bridge, five miles from Armidalc. He walked into a camper's hut, threuj his swag on to the ground, and ignored the occupant’s salutation. A few minutes later lie jumped to his feet, and grasping a pick, said: "I will nurdcr you." The camper ran into tho scrub followed by the intruder, who toon gave up the chase. Tlit intruder visited other huts, and, when he mentioned that lie had been at Bendemecr, word was sent to the Armidale police. Police went out and found that the man had. gone on towards Guyra. They found him near "the Pinch," and questioned him. He admitted that he had been at Bendemecr, but declined to answer further questions. Suddenly, he made a dash for the bush, but the police caught him and brought him to the Armidale lock-up, where he is being detained pending inquiries by the detectives who arc now at Bendemecr investigating the mysterious death of Constable Nowland.

The body of Constable Nowland was found in the McDonald Diver near the police station some time after lie had gone out, armed with a revolver, to investigate a report |that a demented man was causing trouble among’some men who were Mumped nearby. The police were able to discover no other evidence of the presence of a demented man in the district.
