RUSSELL NEWS

(From Our Own Correspondent.) The Eussell Golf Club officially closed the links at Waitangi on Labour Day, after a very, successful season. The links during the year have been in excellent order, and the play of members has shown great improvement. Although conditions were not ideal, most of the members attended and competed in the various events. A dainty luncheon was provided by the lady members. , In the afternoon, when presenting the trophies won during the season, the president (Mr T, Thomson) congratulated the club on the progress made. The following trophies were presented: Championship Cup (ladies), Mrs S. W. Blomfield; championship cup long driving, Dr T. T. Hoskins; aply cup, Mr Ik K. Farrell; mixed foursomes, Mr A. H. Hitchcock and Miss A T obbs; long driving, Mrs T. Thomson; long driving, Dr T. T. Hoksins; approaching, Mrs S. W. Blomfield; approaching, Mr L. T. Blomfield; one-club match, Miss Nobbs, Mr S. Maioha.

A public meeting of the Bay of islands public schools championship .swimming carnival was held in the Russell town hall on Tuesday, 27th, 1 when the following committee was elected:—Messrs Ellis, Handley, Graham, Armitage, Munro, McMinn, Shallard, Adamson and Englchardt. Mr Bisset was elected president and Mr Lindauer secretary. It was resolved that the next carnival take place in February.

On Monday last, 26th nit., the Russell Progress League gave its first dance in the town hall. It was well attended, and will, no doubt, be the first of many pleasant evenings inaugurated by the League.

The evening of October 29 saw Russell town hall packed to its utmost capacity on the occasion of a fancydress ball given under the auspises of the Opua Sports Club. The function proved to be most brilliant, and the grand march was greeted with much admiration and applause. Just before supper the judges, Mrs (Dr) Hoskins and Air Lindauer, presented the prizes, the winner amongst the ladies being Miss Saunders, representing "Alary and Her Little Lamb," and amongst the men Mr Brook as Alephistopheles. Other very striking costumes were: "Alisfit," Air G. Warne; "Hula Girl," Airs S. BlomfiebS; "Gipsy," Aliss Green; ‘ ‘ Gipsy, ’' iss Nobbs; ‘ ‘ Alasquerade, ’ 7 Miss V. Phillips; "Brown Paper Parcel," Airs Donaldson; "Belgium," Afiss McMinn; "Gipsy," Miss Doreen Rigden; "Buy British Goods," Mrs Peterson; "Pierrette," Miss J. AfcTavish; "Old English Lady," Miss A. Gordon; "League of Nations," Aliss Nancy King; "Pierrette," Airs B. Williams; "Parson," Air Donaldson; "A Terrible Turk," Air 8. Christie; "Indian Chief," Air .Sorrcnson; "Gay Caballero," Air B. Williams; "Santa dans," Mr N. Nola; and many others. •Splendid music was supplied by talented musicians from the surrounding district, and a sumptions supper was appreciated by all. At 2 a.m. the dance was brought to a conclusion an 1 launches departed in all directions with tired but happy revellers.

The final Geranium Club social was held on Thursday evening at Arcadia House. Games, competitions an'd dan •- ing were thoroughly enjoyed by the many members and guests. The fob

lowing items were given: song, Mrs Blomfield; duet, Messrs Hitchcock and Blomfield; song, Mrs lago; pianoforte solo, Mrs Warne; concert report in verse, Mr Graham, A sketch, “The Coward,”'acted toy Mrs Blomfield and Messrs Hitchcock and Fisher, was well received by the audience, and selections and dance music supplied by the Benzineophone Orchestra was greatly enjoyed. After supper, Mr Graham stated that he was very pleased with the progress the club had made, and that they had had such, a successful season. Ho, then presented Mr lago with a prize for vanning the most competitions and games at the fortnightly socials. Miss B. Mitchell received second prize. Mr lago spoke on behalf of the members present, thanking Mr Graham for the work and time he had given in the interests of the club.

The evening finished with the singing of the National Anthem and “Autd Lang Syne. ’ ’
