A MINUTE ALTERED

LEGALISING HOLIDAYS. OPPOSITION PARTLY WITHDRAWN. At the mid-September meeting of the Whangarei Borough Council a motion was carried that four workmen on tho engineer’s staff be dismissed, and paid for holidays due. It was pointed out by several dissentients that the wording was incorrect, and the Mayor instructed the Town Clerk to phrase tho motion in such a way that it would bo legal. On the minutes as circulated the motion read:—“That if it is found that such four men to bo dismissed have holidays accrued due, they bo granted to them before dismissal.” This removed the objection of Crs, Finch, Pickmere and Trimmer, who asked that their votes against the motion be erased from the minutes. Cr. A. T. Brainsby said he had voted against the adoption of the report on the grounds that it was reducing tho men from permanent to casual employees. Cr. E. G. W. Tibbits said ho voted against the motion, as it brought new matter into a, committee’s report.
