Paper Dart opened np proceedings with a good five furlongs, with Stewart (light boy) up, in 1.9. This horse looks particularly well, but may want a race or two to bring him to his best. Alloy, looking remarkably well, did 4 furlongs in 545. AVith a fair weight in sight, Air Maida has evidently been doing a lot of work with this horse during the winter, AVan Lu did good serviceable pace work and is an improved horse, on his appearance.
Hoilioma, with nearly J2st. in the. saddle, gave Golden three lengths’ start over four furlongs and caught him when they had gone one. They finished almost abreast (although Hoilioma was taken very wide at the turn) in 525. It was a very smart gallop, outside two trestles, as both carried big weights.
I'rothblower and Automne did six furlongs in 1.2.1, both carrying big Weights and doing it nicely. Archccn did a round at half price, wilh a sprint up the straight. This horse never looked better, but he is going to lind it hard to giVf Neil a stone and a beating. W. Rennie rides Archecn and Frothblower in their engagements. Parsons rides Golden Sceptre, and Bentley, who can still claim a livepound allowance, rides Hoilioma. Kcosing will be riding Autornne.

AUSTRALIAN TURF MELBOURNE CARNIVAL. PHAR LAP -WINS STAKES.' AMMON RA WELL BEATEN. (Received 9 a.m.) MELBOURNE, November ‘ 1. The defeat in the Victoria Derby of the Auckland gelding, Ammon Ra, who was a warm favourite, was the outstanding feature at Flemington yesterday, when the Victoria Racing Club’s Melbourne Cup carnival opened before a large attendance, -including a few New Zealanders. The Derby victor was Johnny Jaysou, who had run second to Ammon Ra in the Australian Jockey Club’s Derby at Randwlck. Ammon Ra was not even placed, Chatham being second and Viol d’Armnur third. Ammon Ra and Opera King were next. Johnny Jayson was seventh in tin* early stages. He finished brilliantly, taking the lead below the distance, and winning by a length and a quarter from Chatham, with Viol d’Armour a neck further back third. After the race Johnny Jayson’s rider, J. E. Pike, said his mount was always going well, and he thought he had a groat chance a long way from home. M. McCarten said Ammon Ra did not go as well as at Randwick. He struck a little trouble at the entrance to the straight, but was beaten at the time. Ammon Ra leaves tomorrow on his return to New Zealand. Phar Lap had an effortless win in the Melbourne Stakes. He won by half a length from the Wellington horse, Concentrate, who battled on gamely. Veilmond was third. The three place-getters were bred in New Zealand. Phar Lap has now Avon £56,440 in stakes. Ashley Reed stated that Concentrate ran an excellent race, and Avould have done bettor if a faster pace had been set oarl\ r .
The New Zealander, Oratorian, halfbrother to Concentrate, won the Maiden Plate, but was lucky to beat Picatus, who finished fast and was only a neck away at the post. Ora‘torian’s rider, Ashley Reed, won this event last year on Land of Nod. The Heroic colt, Vann try. trained by the ox-New Zealander, David Price, led from end to end in the Maribyrnong Plate. He cost 400 guineas as a yearling and lias a record of two wins and a third in three starts. He won the Debutante Stakes at Caulfield on October 10. Sanballat was second and Greenlaw third. Yesterday Powers' court was second, Sanballat third and Greenlaw fourth.
Dcrmid, who was third in the early running, wmn the Can tala. Stakes from the fast-finishing Dennis Boy. Der mid was ridden by A. Knox, who won the Caulfield Cup on Dennis Boy a week ago. When the weights were declared he was engaged to ride Dermid in the Cantala Stakes, but prior to the race preferred Dennis Boy’s chances. As it turned out, he was, luckily fur him, wrong. Pentheus was third and Holmdale, winner of the Moouoe Valley Gold Cup, fourth. Dermid is a brother to the ex-Aucklander, HavaSpot. The Adelaide-owned horse, White Nose, was always in the lead in the Botham Handicap. Carry On made a game effort, but had no chance of catching White Nose, whp won by three lengths and a half. It was a, splendid Cup trial on the part of White Nose. Pike’s “hat trick’ 7 on Vauntry, Phar La]> and Johnny Jayson was a
notable performance. His Melbourne Stakes win on Pliar Lap made his fourth success in the race. He first won on Son of Marsh in 1910, Johnny Jayson’s victory gave him his fourth successive win in the Derby, which he has now won six times. Following are the stake-values to the winners;— Derby, £4661; Maribyrnong Plate, £1050; Cantata Stakes, £1050; Melbourne Stakes, £525; Hotham Handicap, £300; Maiden Handicap, £225. The ‘‘Sydney Morning Herald'' savs: ‘’Tin* Victoria Derby was responsible for one of the greatest setbacks in the history of the classic. Ammon Ra, who was thought to have a mortgage on the race, failed to gain a place, while .Tohhnle Jason, who was not a match for the New Zealander at Rand wick in the A.J.C. Derby, revealed improved stamina and determination.
“There was considerable interference in the straight, Ammon Ra and Chatham being the chief sufferers, though McCarten admitted Ammon Ra W'as beaten at the time. At the finish he seemed a verv tired horso.”
TRAINER PLEASED. CONCENTRATE’S GOOD RUN. (Received 9 a.m.) MELBOURNE, November 1. The Wellington trainer, IT. B. Lorigan, states that he is well pleased, with Concentrate’s condition today after his good effort in running second to Phar Lap in the Melbourne Stakes yesterday. Concentrate has all along claimed many admirers for his Melbourne engagement on Tuesday, and his display yesterday has gained him further support. However, Phar Lap, in spite of his great weight, dominates the market. Concentrate met Phar Lap yesterday on even terms, but in the Cup receives 281bs. from him. Sea Rover is a doubtful starter in the Cup, but a decision will be made tomorrow. Huthalie could not nm in the Cantala Stakes owing to picking up a nail. Prince Dayton reappeared on the track at Flemington yesterday and cantered on the tan. His condition, which has been causing anxiety, shows a slight improvement, and it is hoped that he will be able to run in the Cup, PINAL GALLOPS. BARRIER POSITIONS IN CUP.
