DAMAGE TOTALS £30,000.

FLAMES TOWER SIXTY FEET

(Received 10.30 a.m.) SYDNEY,' This. Day,

One of the most disastrous pithead fires in the history of the northern coatfields caused £30,000 damage at Pelaw Main Colliery, Kurrikurri, during the night. All the buildings and screens were demolished, but the power house and engine rooms w T ere saved. After a great fight by several brigades the fire was prevented from extending to the pit. The flames leapt 60 feet above the mine buildings and the whole town and a radius of two miles were illuminated.

The cause of the outbreak is a mystery. About 400 miners will be thrown idle.
