EXPERIMENTAL FARM

AN UNPROFITABLE YEAR,

(Special to “Northern Advocate.”) DARGAYILLE, This Day.

At the annual meeting of the Northern Union Experimental Society, held at the farm yesterday afternoon, Mr C. J. Hamhlyn presided over an attendance of about 45 farmers.

The retiring committee —Messrs P. A. Jones, W. J. Curnow, T. E. Jones, F, Hill-Taylor, W. W. Cornford, and C. N. Taylor —were re-elected. Mr J, Hogg was re-appointed auditor. The farm manager is now Mr W. E. Bradley.

The chairman paid a tribute to the services rendered by Mr George Short, who had been manager during the past two years.

During the year, said the chairman, the second mortgagee had reduced the rate of interest from 5 to 3 per cent, from February last, and the holder of a chattels security over the stock had reduced his rate of interest from 9 per cent, to 7\ per cent., also as from February.

Mr Hamhlyn predicted a bright future for the society, with the help of the Government subsidy, owing to the decrease in interest charges, reductions in wages of farm workers from £3OO to £250, and the fact that at their annual meeting the Northern Wairoa Co-operative Dairy Co., Ltd., had passed a resolution authorising the directors to enrol the whole of the 700 suppliers as members of the society, deducting the subscription from the cream cheques.

The animal report shows that on the 127-acre farm 53 cows were milked, producing 10,7261bs of fat worth £539 2/10. After paying wages (£315), rates (£7O), and interest (£306) and £7O for manures and seeds, there is a loss in the working account of £260 13/2. In the profit and loss account, after receiving a subsidy for the season of £3OO, there is a loss of £165 17/7.
