HIGH SCHOOL DEBATING
TWO INTERESTING SUBJECTS.
There was * fair attendance of the public at the High School Hall last evening, when, at a meeting of the School Debating Club, two interesting and closely contested debates took place. , The first subject, ‘ ‘ Theory is of more service in life than practice,” was debated by Misses Enid Brown (leader), Queenie Henry, Eosemary Johnson (affirmative), and Olga Hunter, Betty Boult and Muriel Young (negative). The judge, Mr H. E. G. Smith, decided in favour of the affirmative side by 219 to 213 marks.
The second subject, “That the optimist is a greater menace to .society than the pessimist/ ' was debated Peter Luxford (leader), Jdlm Wright and Albert Fergus (affirmative), and Claud Griffiths, William Morris and Ken Given (negative). The negatives were adjudged winners by 211 to 171 points. During the evening the school orchestra Tendered a selection from Faust —“Ildica," and “Spirit of the Hour.” The singing of the National Anthem concluded a very enjoyable evening.
