Mrs Beattie holed a long putt and the game was all square once more. The nineteenth hole was halved, and at the twentieth Mrs Reynolds recovered a bad drive with a good second to the edge of the green, laying her third dead for four. Mrs Beattie played a good drive, a (short second, and sank a long third to take the hole and the match.

WOMEN’S INSTITUTES.

MAUNU.

The Maunu Institute held a well attended meeting at the home of Mrs J. I. Wilson, on Thursday afternoon last.

Each member took something in the grocery line, which will be handed over to the Citizens’ Welfare League in Whangarei. It is rather gratifying to note that this institute has helped considerably to alleviate the distress in the town this winter, In the course of her remarks, the president, Mrs Wilson, stated that Miss Millington had been chosen as the delegate to represent Maunu at the forthcoming conference to be held in Auckland.

A roll call of suggestions for the improvement of the institute was taken. This did not evoke much enthusiasm, for the majority of members had nothing to bring forward. Mrs F. W. Reed was called upon to address the ladies. Her subject was “Home-making.” The speaker stressed the fact that she was not lecturing, but giving a perfectly plain, homely talk to the women present. She pointed out hew the home and its environs should be the brightest and happiest spot in a young person’s life, and that it was given to tire parents, and more especially the mothers, to make and keep it so, and thus encourage youth to And pleasure at home instead of seeking it abroad. Mrs Reed was accorded a very hearty vote of thanks. Mrs Jack gave a resume of the work done by the Hospital Comforts Club, and made an appeal for help to carry on the good work.

A delicious afternoon tea was serv J ed, and a musical programme of high order filled the rest of the afternoon. Mrs Armstrong and Miss Wilson played a pianoforte duet, Mesdames Crawford and Jack sang two duets, Mrs Jack sang a solo and Mrs Crawford, by special request, sang “Danny Boy.” Miss K. McLean also sang two songs in charming style. Mrs Blanshard played the accompaniment. The National Anthem brought a de*. lightful afternoon to a close.

MATAKANA.

At the August meeting of the Matakana Institute final arrangements were made for the third anniversary to be held shortly'. During the. afternoon Mrs Williams gave an exhibition of cake-ieing. Tea was served by Mesdames L. J. Smith, H. Smith and J. W. Smith.

WELLSFORD.

Mrs Leslie gave a-lesson in preserving apples by the sulphur method at a recent meeting of the institute l . Mrs Fyfe showed how to give a marbled effect to papier mache bowls. Mrs Treadwell, of Port Albert, judged the scone competition, the winners being Mrs Kenealy and Mrs J. Grant. Mrs Leslie read a report of the meeting of delegates of the Rodney group.
