LEAGUE FOOTBALL
CITY WINS FROM WARO,
At the Hikurangi Recreation Park on Saturday, the City League seniors again tried conclusions with Waro, the result, being a. win for the Whangarei team by 20 points to nil. Waro fielded a. weak team, several of their beet players being ineapacited through injury, while the: exigencies of employment kept others away from the match. Under the circumstances, they played a remarkably good game, and the score was by no means an indication of the real strength of the team. .From first to last they kept City busy, and only for the fact that the latter club fielded a very strong team and had a good deal of the luck of the game, made the difference in scores eo wide.
Play started in an unpleasant drizzling rain, which soon made the ball greasy and handling difficult. In spite of this there’were some good movements, but these were rarely brought to fruition, as a player would cither slip or fumble the slippery ball before the end of a good passing bout. A feature of the play was the excellent goal-kicking by Swanberg, who sent a slippery ball over the bar three times and only missed twice more by the smallest of margins.
From the initial whistle Waro started to press, and within one minute had City defending hard right on its goal-line. This position was eased by a kick upfield by Rockell, from which the City men took the leather to the other end of tho field within 10 yards of the score line. From a. scrum here, F. McDonald crossed for a neat try, which Swanberg converted from an awkward angle.
No further scores were made until right on the half-time whistle, when Swanberg kicked a penalty goal.— City 7, Waro 0. Some time after the commencement of the second half a breach of the ‘‘play the ball” rule gave City a penalty kick, which .Swanberg again turned into a scorer.
Waro, who had worked hard up till now, commenced to feel the strain of City’s constant pressure, a,nd the latter’s attacks became more dangerous. From one of these Shortland made a nice opening for Whitelaw, who crossed the line and ran round to score between the posts. Shortland added two more’ points with the kick at goal.—’City 14, Waro 0. The next score was a solo effort by Swanberg, who followed up a kick ( which Meyer fumbled through the ball being too greasy. Swanberg managed to reach the leather before his opponent and dashed over. F'. Jones failed to add the major points.—City 17, Waro 0. At this juncture, E. McDonald had to retire with a nasty scalp wound, caused through falling.on to the point of A. Wells’ knee. Just on the final whistle, from a scrum near Waro’e line, Shortland slipped round the blind side and scored, The kick was not persevered with. —City 20, Ware 0. Mr J. Fetter, son was referee. JUNIOR GAME. KAMO OVER-RUNS CITY. The match between City and Kamo juniors at Kensington Park resulted in an easy win for Kamo by 24 points to nil. The condition of the ground and ball, which was greasy witlf the rain, suited this team to a nicety and they over-ran the City team with ease, particularly during the second half. Mr. J. Hill was referee. INTERSTATE TEST. N.vS.W. BEATS QUEENSLAND. (Received 9 a.m.) SYDNEY, June 14, In the third Rugby League lest match yesterday N.S.W. defeated Queensland by 28 points to 6.
