Rain commenced to fall just before Maungakaramea and City took tho field on No. 1 ground at Rugby Park. The grandstand was packed with enthusiasts, but the lines were deserted. On account of the conditions, both sides were chary of opening out in passing movements. M. Morresey and E. O’Carroll headed a forward rush which carried play over City’s line, and resulted in a force-down.

Twice Kerr cleared with good kicks and Burkhardt sold a nice ‘‘dummy” to put City in an attacking position. He was injured, but continued. Maungakaramea then camped in the opposing territory for a time, and W. Rika signalised his return to senior football by notching the first points. Prom near the sideline, 30 yards out, lie kicked a great penalty goal. Only twice during the next quarter of an hour, did scores look likely, and both times it was Maungakaramea which was knocking. Once Jack Litt just failed to race the defence for a force-down, and on another occasion B. Edge would have been over had ha taken his pass. On other occasions ’Karamea would have been there but for obstruction and a forward pass. Then in tight play near the line the City rover got flagrantly offside. The greasy ball was too much for Rika,

Half-time came with Maungakaramea leading by three to nil, but tho score might easily have been another ten points in the country team’s favour.

After the spell Burkhardt (head) and Edge (knee), resumed with bandages. , City set the pace and Morrison tried a penalty shot, just as a cow invaded tho field. The kick missed and the cow trotted off, the incident causing much amusement among the spectators. Maungakaramea gained the upper hand again and there were several good handling bouts, but the City defence stood the strain. Harrison was particularly effective with line-finders. On the heavy ground the game seesawed from end to end, with City showing to much better /advantage than hitherto. Once Baraeat’s nippiness alone prevented the score which would have equalised. . The crowd was roused when Winstanley made a great run down his wing. He gained 30 yards, but was unsupported. Then the ’Kardmea forwards broke through in a loose rush and were attacking in front of 'City’s goal when McDonald cut through and ran alone to half-way, but again there was no one to back him up. In the closing stages Maungakaramea pressed hard, but could not manage another score, and the game ended—Maungakaramea 3, City 0.

OLD BOYS SUPERIOR. FIFTEEN TO NIL. Old Boys had a decisive victory by 15 points to nil over Hora Hora at Rugby Park on Saturday. As tho game opened rain began to fall, and in a few minutes players and ball were soaked, making handling difficult. Play opened quietly and for the first few minutes there was some rather indecisive work in mid-field. A little later Hora Hora got into Old Boys’ territory, but Sheriff effectively cleared tho position. Things looked very dangerous for Old Boys when Cameron slipped on the wot turf, but they managed to clear and play swung back. Sheriff was again prominent in leading the forwards. Old Boys gained the lead shortly after when they were awarded a free kick in front of the goal. Webber had no difficulty in piloting the ball ever the cross-bar. Old Boys, in view of the conditions, were wisely keeping the ball to the toe, but Hora Hora. were rather inclined to attempt to handle. Play swept up and down field until Old Boys again got to Hora Horn’s line and scored an unexpected try. Hart saw an opening and dived over. A few minutes later Hosking was out of position -and a movement broke down and Hora Hora had play in Old Boys quarter. A free kick to Hora Hora fell short. At half-time there was no further score. Soon after resuming Britland was caught offside, but Hora Hora’s free kick was to no advantage. Horn Hora started a forceful forward movement which ended in the bull being thrown out, but it bounced on Saul’s chest and spoilt a likely chance. Pepene was lucky again when the ball bounced handily for him to clear. Both sides had spells of attacking. Hora Hora put up a steady pressure and Cross ran nicely round and transferred to Saul. The latter’s kick, however, went astray, and Cameron, picking up beautifully, nipped round to clear Old Boys.

Shortly after Old Boys were seen inj a movement which took them into Horn Horn’s quarter, and resulting from this Tilly got across. The kick was unsuccessful. Only a few minutes later Old Boys were back once more and Tilly again crossed, but Webber’s kick missed. Old Boys had definitely tho upper hand, and came back to the attack again. There was some passing, and Hosting just got over well out. Time was called soon after with no further score. Mr Dennehy was referee. PORTLAND v. CITY. The result in the game between City and Portland at Portland was very rightly a draw. The teams were evenly matched, and if cither had won the other would have boon unlucky. In the first five minutes of the game Wil-, liams scored a try for Portland, but just before half-time the visiting forwards swept goalwards and Eyles got over. Boon after Portland scored from a similar movement, but missed the kick from right in front of the posts. This enabled City to equalise by medium of a penalty goal kicked by Dickeson, making the final scores six all.

JUNIOR GRADE. Mangakahia v. Whananaki. Teams from districts/ over 50 miles apart met in the junior curtain-raiser between Whananaki and Mangakahia, at Rugby Park. Whananaki had consistently the bettor of the first half, but were three points down at half time. J. Kairau, who is a promising wing-threequarter, drop-kicked a penalty goal for Mangakahia. The Whananaki backs were seen in some nice passing movements, and once, when D. Moore, first five-eighths, made an interception he had three men running with him in a straight line, but failed to score. The game was characterised by earnest battling rather than, anything of a spectacular nature. . Players on both sides showed that they were not in the least afraid of going down to it, and Whananaki scored after a movement full of interest. D, Moore opened the game up and sent to G. Moore, who dropped the ball but kicked it on. C. Maekie picked it up but was held up on the line, and W. Maekie got the verdict. G. Moore’s kick just cleared the bar. A few minutes later G. Moore increased Whananaki’s lead, kicking a penalty goal from well out. The game ended with the score — Whananaki 8, Mangakahia 3. At Onerahi. Throwing the ball about in the first half, High School piled up. the points against Onerahi. They found handling more difficult in the wet second spell, when Hutchinson scored and Beasley converted a try for the se§(eiders. High School won by 16 points to 5. Owing to accidents both sides finished one man short. THIRD GRADE. Old Boys Win. Old Boys defeated School A by 19' points to 10 in a curtain-raiser match at Rugby Park. Old Boys in the first half put up a good score and were leading by 11 points to 4, at half-time. Play was very energetic, and both sets of backs indulged in frequent passing movements. For School, Amos kicked a fine field goal. In the second half Old Boys added 8 points to their total. School wore playing well, but could not make lip the leeway. Scorers for Old Boys wore Knew, Sterling, Patterson (2), and Robertson. Knew and Robinson converted. Walters scored two tries for School.
