RAILWAY BOARD
FIRST MEETING ON WEDNESDAY. (Special to “Northern Advocate.”) WELLINGTON, This Day. The newly appointed Railway Board will meet for the first time on Wednesday morning. The meeting will probably be devoted to organisation details. It is expected that at an early date the directors will undertake the duty imposed on them by the legislation during the emergency session of submitting their recommendations regarding railway lines now under construction. This prescribes that within one year of their appointment the directors may submit to the Minister of Railways a report on any railway, or part of the railway under construction at the time of the passing of the Railways Act 1931, recommending that the work of construction be not further proceeded with, or it be carried out to such an extent only as is recommended by the board. The Minister shall, as soon as practicable, lay such a report before Parliament, “and if both Houses pass a resolution approving the recommendation of the board no furrier works in connection with the construction of such a railwav or part of a railway shall hereafter be carried out, save in accordance with the recommendations of the board. ’ ’ No new staff appointments are anticipated in connection with the Railway Board, as its chief executive officer will be the General Manager of Railways, Mr H. H. Sterling, and the board’s business can be carried out by the secretariat of railway headquarters.
