PORTLAND
(From Our Own Correspondent.) WELFARE LEAGUE. Tho first meeting of the new Management Committee of the Welfare League was hold in the Library Hall on Tuesday evening. Those present were: Messrs F. Boyd, A. J. Magee, J. Mackenzie, R. Potter, W. Purchase, C. Just, P. Mee, D. Lorimer, L, F. Morgan and E. Hay (secretary). Mr M. Morgan was on committee duty. Prior to the commencement of business, the secretary welcomed the new members and asked for loyal co-operation of all for the advancement of the welfare scheme. Nominations were then called for chairman for the ensuing year. Mr F. Boyd, being the only nomination, was elected unanimously, and Mr W. Purchase was re-elected deputy chairman. CORRESPONDENCE. ■Letters were read from Messrs Wilsons (N.Z.) Cement, Ltd., dealing with the annual and monthly reports, also one intimating that the eup, originally donated to the Sports Club, was to be held by the Welfare League until such time as the Sports Club again functioned. In the meantime, the cup conld be competed for annually at the employees’ picnic, as a points prize. In response to an application from the School Committee it was decided to grant permission to screen a special picture in aid of the school sports fund Reports. The treasurer reported credit balances as follows: —Bank of New Zealand, £B4 Is 6d; P.O. Savings Bank, £36 Os lid. 1 Tho secretary’s report stated that receipts for April and May totalled £99 I4s Cd, and expenditure £B9 10s. The various activities were briefly recounted. ■ Billiards and Canteen, —Receipts had improved. Cinema. — monthly tickets were sold in May. Following the period the works were closed, the takings suffered greatly. Sunday School. —Classes were being held on Sunday mornings from 9 to 10, instead of in the afternoon. Since the change attendances had shown an improvement. Grounds.—Work authorised to be carried out on football and hockey grounds had been completed; also the path in front of pavilion had been graded, and it was hoped this would obviate the flooding of the pavilion. Band. —The band had played in Whangarei and at the Winter Show, Endeavours were being made to compete in the Auckland contest during October. All the reports were adopted.
I General. Iwas decided that, in the event of 4ho theatrephone being' required to supply part of programmes for dances, etc., a specified''charge be made. The matter of having a cabinet for theatrephone erected in the hall was left in the hands of the chairman, Mr Morgan, and the secretary. Appreciation was expressed at t' efforts of the Croquet Club in raising funds for the upkeep of the lawn. It was, reported that the sum of £4 had been received.. ‘
In accordance with.the usual procedure, it was decided to call applications for the position of cleaner for the ensuing 12 months. Mr W. G. Cain was elected to fill a vacancy on the Management Committee. The committee resolved to adopt the recommendation from the annual meeting of members, "that the annual free dance be abandoned this year, owing to the financial depression." Other recommendations were deferred till next meeting, the secretary, in the meantime, to secure as muchj data as possible on the different questions raised. Accounts amounting to £43 17s 9d were passed for payment. / Sub-Committees. The following sub-committees AA’ere appointed:— Billiards.—Messrs M. Morgan, D. Lorimer, W. Purchase, R. Potter and! A. J. Magee.
Cinema.—'Messrs C. Just, L. F. Morgan, P. Mee, J. Mackenzie, H. Poole and W. G. Cain.
All members will act on the Grounds, Social, Gymnasium and Show Executive sub-committees.
Representative on Library Committee, Mr P. Mee; Band Committee, Mr H. Poole; Emergency Committee, Messrs Boyd, Purchase and Just. N.Z. LABOUR PARTY. The Portland branch of the New Zealand Labour Party convened a meeting in the Portland Hall to meet Mr W. J. Jordan, M.P. for Manakau, and Mr J, G. Barclay, Labour candidate for Marsden. Mr J. Windsor, president of the local branch, presided over an attendance of about 50, and introduced the speakers. Mr Jordan dealt briefly with the state of polities and the country today, whilst Mr Barclay outlined his suggest ed programme for the coming campaign. He did not in any way make a political speech, but intimated that he would visit Portland at later dates for that purpose. A vote of thanks to the speakers and confidence in the Labour Party was carried without, dissent. Mr Jordan briefly acknowledged the vote.
