LATE DR. BAXTER

EARLY CAREER RECOUNTED, Further particulars now available show that the late Dr. W. W. Baxter, whose father was a London stockbroker, was born at Neath, in Swansea Valley, Wales, not far from .the locality where Lady Bledisloe spent her childhood. His mother was a member of an old Irish country family, named Whittington, descendants of Ihe famous Sir Richard Whittington, “twice Lord Mayor of London.” Dr. Baxter indeed held the Whittington family seat. His medical training was received at University College, London, and he won his degree of M.R.C.S. before he was 21 years of age. For nine years he practised in the mining districts of Clydach, Glais and Birehgrove, Swansea Valley, and then for about 13 years at Manningtree, Essex. In 1903 he came to New Zealand and practised for nine years at Whangarei, where for some time he was medical superintendent of the hospital.
