Airs AlcKinstry spent the week-end in Auckland, returning homo on Monda v afternoon.

Mrs Bannister returned from a visit to her mother, arriving home last Saturdav.

Miss Gladys Brake who left AV.lvangarei some years ago for Sydney, has been for a time in London and is now in New York.

Tire Club Handicap in the senior grade was won by Airs Reynolds, who has played consistently good golf this season.

Airs D. A. McLean has received word that her daughter Miss Mora McLean, who for the past two years has been teaching in England and Switzerland, is leaving for homo in December.

On, Thursday afternoon Airs Woolley, Apiranva Avenue, entertained the friends of Airs Woolley Scur.,- at a charming bridge party in her home. The winners were- Airs Radeliffe, Airs C. E. AVoolley, Mrs Alackic and Airs Bisset.

Other bridge* hostesses this week were Airs Atasou, Onerahi and Airs Crimp, Gome's Rond.

Four .hostesses, Alesdames Boult, Bennett, Ala.ckaya.nd AliUiugton, entertained 20 tables of ladies at a bdidge drive at the Arcadia, tea-rooms on Tuesday evening. Lovely bowls of Iceland poppies made the room cheerful and pretty and after a delicious supper trophies were presented to Airs Good, Airs Nelson, Airs Reynolds, Airs Tlionio, Airs Alurdoch and' Alias Wiglov.

Last Sunday a team of golfers from the Bay of Islands visited AVha'ugarei and played the local club. Although defeated, 1 hoy enjoyed the outing on the beautiful Alt. Deuby links and found play on them rather different from what they were accustomed to, as the fairways are in splendid order just now and the greens, particularly fast. There wore players from as far north as Oka.ihau and their euthusiam in travelling so far for a game is commoiulabl,l. .

Writing to a friend under date August 28, an old Whaugarei boy, Air A. Clark-Walker, now in, the Survey Department in Malay E,tales, furnishes the following item of news interesting to many Whaugarei people: “The outstanding incident of -the past fortnight has been a visit from Airs Bray and Connie, who arc making a tcur of the East Indies, and who stayed with me at Seremban for two days, during which time we visited some of the places of interest—Jelebu Pass, Port Dickson, etc., and played Badmington. Had they arrived sooner they would have now gone north to stay with tho 1 should then have missed .them. They have now gone north to say with tho Bedlingtons at Kedah. It has been a very dry season, and, up to leaving me, neither Airs Bray nor Connie had experienced rain in Malaya, but I am told that, next day, Connie got caught out in it at Kuala Zumpin.”

NURSES’ HOME DANCE

AN ENJOYABLE OCCASION.

The Nurses’ Home at the Whangaroi Public Hospital was the scene of a very enjoyable dance last evening, given by bachelor friends of the nurses. The spacious hall was 1 decorated with coloured balloons, presenting a cheerful scene and making an ideal sotting for the many charming frocks worn. The night was cool and well suited for dancing to music which was supplied by Alessrs D. Golder, P. Alunro and J. Dobson.

Air and--Mrs AlcAinch will take -up thfir residence in Kaikoho.

The Savoyan Dance Club’s evenings arc becoming very popular, with growing attendances, under experienced management. Last Saturday evening 85 couples were present and the floor and music were first class. Twelve couples took part in the final of tli-3 waltzing competition. The standard was high, and the winning pair, Miss |P. Dunn and Mr E. McGeachey, both of Hikurangi, gave an excellent performance. Two novelty dances -were held during the evening. A Monte Carlo waltz was won by Aliss E. Marvin and Air C. Mutch, and a spot, fox-trot by Aliss SommcrviHo and Air D. Miller.

MAUNU WOMEN'S INSTITUTE

The October meeting of the Alaimn Women’s Institute was held at the residence of Airs D. A, Wilson. The president, Mrs Dorehill, presided over a large attendance of members. The business included a discussion on the forthcoming show which the four women’s institutes intend holding on October 15 in the Community Club Rooms.

A very interesting talk -was given by Airs A, R, Plekmere on the native flowers of Now Zealand. Airs Pickmere had a surprising number of specimens for members to inspect. Afterwards tea was served, followed by a roll-call of the three most important medicines to have in the homo.

Airs Dorehill then gave a humorous recitation, and a happy afternoon was closed b\j the singing of the National Anthem.

An event to which all lovers of children’s dancing eagerly look forward, is the annual display given by the pupils of Misses Keitha and Maisie Somerville. October 21 and 22 have been booked at the Town Hall for the 1930 display, and the rehearsals of the pupils give promise of the performance being an outstanding one.

Mr George AlcAinch, oldest son of Mr and Mrs. J. AlcAinch, of Ivaakohe, was married, at his parents’ home on | Haturday evening, September 27, to Miss Hilda Dre wet, eldest daughter of '.Mrs n.nd the late Mr T. Drpwot, of Waima-maku. The Rev. L ,T. Hoard conducted the ceremony. The wedding invitations were confined to the immediate members of the family. After the ceremony the, bridal party and guests sat down to the wedding breakfast, at which the customary toasts were honoured.
