NOTABLE DIAMOND JUBILEE
Tho’Auckland "Star” is today celebrating its .diamond jubilee. We wish vo extend to the proprietors our hearty congratulations, and our best wishes rhat the paper may have "many happy returns of the day.” The ‘ ‘.Star ’ } is one of the outstanding examples of British journalism, and the people of Auckland have good cause to be proud of the journal which has grown, up .\ ith their city and assisted very materially to make it the largest .-outre of population in the Dominion. Looking .down the vista of time, sixty years is only a short space, but, in the history of a. young country such as New Zealand, it stretches out to the dimensions of a life time. In that life time the foundations of Auckland have boon well and truly laid. Tor this,, the press of the city well may comfort itself by the reflection that, in days bf sunshine, and in days of rain, alike, it has striven to promote all that contributes to the building of a great city. The ‘ ‘ Star, ’’ on its sixtieth 'birthday, may. reflect with, pleasure and satisfaction upon its contribution in this respect. The growth of Auckland during the past sixty years—and the thirty years preceding that date —is strikingly shown in a remarkably flue Diamond Jubilee Number issued by the ‘ ‘Star ” today. Apart altogether from being a striking example of. the printing and illustrative art, the number, which consists of 48 pages, is a complete history of Auckland from infancy ■to lusty manhood. ..It also tells tho story of the men who launched the •‘Star” and .steered it safely through [he shoals and whirlpools into, the ocean of' success. The commanders laid down the policy that neither money nor energy should bo spared to make their craft well-found in every way. In pursuance of that policy they adopted every improvement in the mechanical production of a paper and in the gathering of news. The success of the policy is self-evident today, when, the ‘ ‘Star” celebrates its diamond jubilee, admired by the whole newspaper . world and held in high esteem by its readers.
