SAILOR KING'S FUNCTION NAVAL CONFERENCE OPENING'. BATTLESHIP REDUCTION PHASE. (United Press Association —By Electric Telegraph—Copyright.) (Received 8,29 a.m.) LONDON, December 20. The King’s last public speech was on October 10, 1928, when His Majesty opened the new Tyne Bridge, halting en route from Balmoral to London. A month later he attended the Cenotaph ceremony, and the news of his illness was Announced on November 22.
The ‘'Daily Telegraph’ * comments: “It will appeal to imagination throughout the world that the Sailor King is to open the Naval Conference, alone among monarchs and chiefs of state. King George is a service man par excellence.’’ The editorial reminds readers that the. King had been 14 years afloat and had seen service in' all parts of the world when he was called to the throne.
Mr A. V. Alexander, First Lord of the Admiralty, told a questioner in the House of Commons that no official or semi-official communication , had been received from any Government participating in the Eive-Power Conference intimating willingness to view favourably a substantial reduction in battleship strength, either now or after a fixed period, though the invitations to the conference had suggested consider ation of the-battleship question.
