CHRISTCHURCH, This Day,

In the Supreme Court, Samuel Bates and Leslie Holland, for “ringing in’’ the trotter Bruce as Imperial Thorpe were sentenced to one year’s gaol with hard labour apiece, by Air Justice Adams.

The Crown Prosecutor said the prisoners had committed an impudent swindle.

The Judge said the men had worked with the sam*e dishonest minds to commit a fraud in Which- there was a possibility of considerable profit to themselves. Their hopes were disappointed, but that did not affect the nature and quality of their aCt, The sentence mUst be substantial.
