TRADE WITH THE EAST
DELEGATION ARRIVES
DIRECT SERVICE ADVOCATED
(Per press Association.—Copyright.) WELLINGTON, This Day.
By the Ulimaroa there arrived Messrs Pronk and Evirts, representatives of the Dutch East Indies Shipping Company, to inquire into the prospects of direct trade with the East. They will discuss with the Prime Minister and producers and exporters, but will not have time to visit the South Island.
They consider Niew Zealand handicapped by having to trade through Australia and tranship (there, which kills New Zealand’s chance of getting a footing in the East. With a direct service they think there is an excellent chance of building up a trade in dairy produce. More meat is being used in the East, but there are still religious obstacles to be oversome. The tourist traffic is also a factor to be considered.
